Provide Support for New Online Resources

Teachers today are looking to educational organizations for unique online resource offerings. Choices is developing online resources that will include an array of activities that complement and enhance Choices’ text-based materials. Some examples include:

  • Video of scholar interviews tailored for use in classrooms, for homework, and for professional development for teachers.
  • Digitized primary sources such as documents, photographs, and other visuals.
  • Interactive maps and timelines with scholars acting as guides and exploring related primary source material.
  • Lesson plans that highlight a range of skills and engage students with these online resources.

Support a 3-5 Day Summer Institute

The Choices Program offers summer institutes at Brown University. Open to secondary level teachers, these are typically 3-5 day programs that allow participants to deepen their understanding of major international issues, and introduce them to effective instructional strategies for engaging adolescents. See Challenge to National Security: A Summer Institute for Educators for a sample. Institutes can focus on current issues or historical turning points.

Underwrite a Professional Development Program

The Choices Program offers a variety of professional development programs for secondary school teachers. The interactive programs give participants first-hand experience with the international content and student-centered approach of the Choices Program, and all provide opportunity for reflection on applications for the classroom.

Contribute to Development of a New Unit

The teaching resources of the Choices Program bring ground-breaking research on critical turning points in history and pressing issues of today to secondary classrooms. The program introduces one-two new units each year. In order to ensure high quality, balanced, and accurate teaching resources, Choices draws on the expertise of scholars at the Watson Institute, Brown University, and other universities and research institutions. Most recently, Choices released its Conflict in Iraq: Searching for Solutions unit. We are currently developing units on Iran and on Cuba after Castro. These are prime examples of sensitive and timely topics that can be a challenge for teachers to address in the classroom.

Provide Support to Update a Unit

Units are revised frequently to keep up with current events and changing historiography. Choices prides itself on providing up-to-date resources so that students can consider and then discuss both history and today’s pressing international issues.

Support an Internship

Since 2001, Choices has sponsored a year long internship for a recent college graduate. This internship provides a wonderful opportunity to gain professional experience at a cutting edge educational organization. This also provides Choices with an important opportunity to be exposed to fresh perspectives and ideas. Additional information is available is here.

When possible, we also hire a summer intern to assist with a variety of projects.
