Democracy and Protest in Iran • October 22, 2009 • 8:30am-4:00pm
This past June, the world watched with great anticipation as hundreds of thousands of Iranians took the streets of Tehran to protest the election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which was tainted by allegations of fraud. This protest, dubbed the “Green Revolution”, was eerily similar the waves of protest that culminated in the Islamic Revolution of 1979, and has plunged Iran into its deepest political crisis since 1979. Tehran has always been a hotbed of protest, and democracy has long been an aspiration for many Iranians.
The Choices Program is offering a one-day institute for secondary level teachers to explore the political forces giving shape to contemporary Iran. While in attendance at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies, participating teachers will explore effective instructional strategies for engaging students in Iranian history and the roots of the current political unrest, and hear from Shiva Balaghi, Cogut International Humanities Fellow at Brown University. Dr. Balaghi will present a pictorial history of the democracy movement in Iran with an emphasis on protests in Tehran in 1906, 1953, 1979, and 2009
