Optional Lesson: Racial Identity in Brazil
These videos can be used with the Optional Lesson plan in Brazil: From Colony to Democracy. The printed lesson has students compare the race categories in Brazil's 1976 and 1990 censuses. As an extra challenge, teachers may wish to have students compare the Brazilian conception of race with the U.S. conception of race. These clips present two different views on this topic. Teachers may find these clips useful as a springboard for discussion or as a way to infuse different perspectives into the conversation.
How are Brazilian and U.S. definitions of race different? [James Green – 2:11]
Day Five: Current Issues in Brazil
These videos can be used with the Day 5 lesson plan in Brazil: From Colony to Democracy. The printed lesson introduces students to four current challenges in Brazil. These videos add complexity to the descriptions provided in the text. Encourage students to incorporate the information in the clips into their presentations.
