Applications are due on March 3, 2023, by 11:59 pm PST.
Applicants will be notified by April 3, 2023, as to whether their application has been accepted, waitlisted, or declined.
Commitment by accepted applicants must be made to the Choices Program by April 14, 2023.

Applications must be submitted to the Choices Program, not to the NEH. Applications sent to the NEH will not be reviewed. Questions about the application process may be directed to Mimi Stephens (Mimi_Stephens@brown.edu). 

There are two parts to the application: 

1. Please complete this Google form

2. Please answer the following questions succinctly. Limit your responses to no more than 3 or 4 paragraphs per question.

    1. Why do you want to attend this Institute? What do you hope to gain from your participation?
    2. What aspects of your background/experience/teaching/interests will help you contribute to the Institute?
    3. How do you currently teach about war and historical memory in your classroom? If you are a new teacher and have not had much experience teaching these topics, describe your initial thoughts on how you may do so.
    4. Please list the courses you are planning to teach next year and the grade level of students in these courses. If you are unsure, please list courses you have taught in the past two years and their audiences.
    5. Is there anything else you would like to share about your eligibility for the Institute?

Send your responses to these questions and your resume as an attachment in one PDF or Word doc to Mimi_Stephens@brown.edu. Please include your last name as part of the file name. Examples: “Carr_NEH” or “Alverez_resume_questions”

Twenty-five applicants will be selected. Full-time or part-time educators who teach in public, charter, independent, and religiously affiliated schools or as homeschooling educators may apply. A limited number of educators who work outside the classroom and who can demonstrate that their participation will advance project goals and enhance their professional work may be selected. At least five spaces will be reserved for teachers who are new to the profession (those who have been teaching for five or fewer years). 

Participants must be United States citizens, residents of U.S. jurisdictions, or foreign nationals who have been residing in the United States or its territories for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline. U.S. citizens teaching abroad at U.S. chartered institutions are also eligible to participate. Foreign nationals teaching abroad are not eligible to participate. 

Individuals may not apply to participate in an institute whose director is a family member, is affiliated with the same institution, has served as an academic advisor to the applicant, or has led a previous NEH-funded Seminar, Institute, or Landmarks program attended by the applicant. In any given year, an individual may apply to a maximum of two projects but may attend only one. 

Participants may not be delinquent in the repayment of federal debt (e.g., taxes, student loans, child support payments, and delinquent payroll taxes for household or other employees). Individuals may not apply to participate in an institute if they have been debarred or suspended by any federal department or agency. 

The selection committee is composed of the project director and two or more colleagues, at least one of whom is a high school history teacher. They evaluate all complete applications to select a group of participants and identify alternates.

Once you have accepted an offer to attend any NEH Summer Program, you may not accept an additional offer or withdraw in order to accept a different offer.
