Seth Garfield

Seth Garfield is professor of Latin American history at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his BA and Ph.D. in history from Yale University. His publications explore the history of race, ethnicity, inequality, and environmental change in twentieth-century Brazil. He is the author of Indigenous Struggle at the Heart of Brazil: Frontier Expansion, State Policy and the Xavante Indians, 1937-1988; and In Search of the Amazon: Brazil, the United States, and the Nature of a Region, both published by Duke University Press. His work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and the Fulbright Foundation.
